A team led by Gerard Zinzindohoue of Benin's fisheries and oceanography institute swept 11.5km of seabed with sonar, then sent a National Geographic deep-sea camera down past 50 metres. It found eight corals and eight fish species, including Guinean angelfish, on a reef presumed dead since the 1960s.
The IUCN has moved the numbat from endangered to near threatened. About 300 were left by the late 1970s; between 2,000 and 3,000 now live in Western Australia, after four decades of fox and cat baiting, predator-proof fencing and Perth Zoo breeding that seeded at least five self-sustaining populations.

Rajasthan's forest department has placed three captive-bred chicks in a new rewilding tunnel at Ramdevra in Jaisalmer, built for Rs 9.25 crore. They will forage, build flight muscle and meet real weather without human contact for about four months before release. Fewer than 150 remain in the wild.
