Greenville's Eddie Smith turned down $400m and gave his company away

Eddie Smith Jr, 83, bought a near-bankrupt boat builder in Greenville, North Carolina in 1968 and has turned down offers well north of $400 million for it. He has instead placed Grady-White Boats into a perpetual purpose trust that cannot sell it, alongside a non-profit expected to give tens of millions a year to education, healthcare and conservation.

NHS England will give 5,000 people with MS a pill to help them walk

NHS England has approved fampridine for multiple sclerosis, the first treatment it funds specifically for walking difficulty. Around 5,000 people are expected to be eligible in the first year. Trials found it works for roughly 43% of patients with walking impairment, who gained about 25% in walking speed.

Sperm whales blow bubbles so they can nap without floating up

Researchers at St Andrews and Neuchatel tagged 42 sperm whales off Norway and found they release gas bubbles before resting upright just below the surface. The bubbles offset the buoyancy of the spermaceti oil in their heads, letting them hang still through naps that last 10 to 15 minutes.

Texas beaches logged more than 650 Kemp's ridley nests this year

More than 650 nests of the Kemp's ridley, the world's smallest and most endangered sea turtle, have been recorded on the Texas coast in 2026, beating last year's record of 449. Technicians patrol Padre Island National Seashore daily from April, and more than 3,000 hatchlings have been released so far.

Ursa the lynx left Kyiv as a sick pet and has now felt grass

Ursa, a Eurasian lynx kept illegally as a pet in Kyiv, was found seriously ill in January and flown to Britain in February after The Big Cat Sanctuary in Kent raised £134,000 to move her. After months in temporary quarters she has walked on grass for the first time, sharing an enclosure with three other rescued cats.
