Food banks in the Global FoodBanking Network kept 500 million kilograms of surplus food out of landfill in 2025, turning it into roughly two billion meals for 40.5 million people, 2.5 million more than the year before. The emissions avoided are equivalent to taking 473,000 cars off the road.
The Mayor of London launched the capital's first Clean Rivers and Waterways Plan on 29 July, backed by 16.25 million pounds from City Hall and 1.8 billion pledged by more than 50 partner organisations over five years. It covers ten catchments, from the Wandle to the Roding, and aims to restore 550 hectares of habitat and 80km of river.
Six white rhinos whose mothers were killed by poachers across KwaZulu-Natal around 2017 have each now given birth in the wild. Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife hand-reared them for four to five years before returning them to protected reserves, where all six bonded with wild herds and bred naturally.
Researchers at Guangzhou Medical University followed 60,394 UK Biobank participants born between 1951 and 1956, when British rationing meant children under two got no sugar ration at all. Those exposed had a 46% lower risk of Alzheimer's disease and a 27% lower risk of dementia of any kind, and scans showed brains ageing more slowly.
US shipments through May 2026 reached 1.34 million heat pumps against 1.23 million gas furnaces, with furnace shipments down 10.5% on the same period last year, according to the Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute. The Building Decarbonization Coalition counted heat pumps in 46% of new American homes completed over the past year.
