Excavators at Hohle Fels cave in Germany's Swabian Jura recovered two mammoth-ivory birds, each two to three centimetres long, found 1.5 metres apart in a layer dating to about 40,000 years ago. One is brooding, the other has its wings spread. They are the smallest sculptures yet found at the site.
