The UN's annual food security report puts the number of people going hungry in 2025 at 645 million, or 7.8 per cent of the world, down from 8.1 per cent in 2024 and 8.6 per cent in 2022. Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean drove most of the improvement, and 43 million fewer people are hungry than three years ago.
Surgeons at King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Riyadh have performed the world's first liver transplant using a single-port robotic system, on a six-year-old boy with Wolcott-Rallison syndrome. His father donated the left lobe of his own liver. The graft is working and no complications have been seen.

Volunteers watching the cliffs at Dancing Ledge in Dorset have confirmed a puffling at the final puffin colony on mainland England's south coast, the first in 30 years. Thirteen people logged around 150 hours at the ledges. Three breeding pairs are left.
From 19 July, large companies across the EU may no longer destroy unsold clothes, accessories or footwear, and must sell, donate or prepare them for reuse. The European Environment Agency estimates that between 264,000 and 594,000 tonnes of textiles were being destroyed each year before anyone wore them.
